Guiding You Through The Wonders Of Cayo, Belize

Being a guide at Hidden Valley means I not only get to direct the tours, but I also get to see the amazing reactions of guests when they lay their eyes on our magical wonders of Belize. Both Hidden Valley and Belize have so many amazing adventures to discover, here are some of my choices of most dos in Hidden Valleys 7200 acres beautiful pine forests in my own home district of Cayo.

1. Visit a Mayan temple.

Belize is home to many cultures—truly the definition of a melting pot, but one of the most ancient and impacteful cultures are the Maya. Thousands of years ago they formed a complex and sophisticated civilization which left us with amazing temples, some higher than 140 feet! These large, majestic temples rise above the canopy. Neat Hidden Valley, you’ll find several impressive sites including Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, and the grandest, Caracol. These are all just a short drive from the lodge. My recommendation is to go in the morning, to beat the heat and the crowds. Going in the morning also means you have a better chance of spotting wildlife!

2. Exploring Sacred Caves

Another one of my favourite activities is visiting Belize’s many mysterious and sacred caves. Belize, like the rest of Central America, is made up of mostly limestone. These rocks are easily carved and eroded by water which left us with many cave formations scattered throughout the country. To the Mayas, these were literal portals to the underworld, Xibalba, a place of fright where deities lived, and souls of the dead must pass through before ascending to the heavens.

There are a few choices when it comes to caves such as Barton creek which is a relaxing canoe ride about a kilometre into a cave. If you like challenging and adventurous expeditions, then ATM cave may be for you. My personal favourite is cave tubing, I believe it is the perfect combination between, nature, relaxation and adventure. Floating through the caves on an inner tube is an experience like no other.

3. Chasing Waterfalls

For me, the best thing about Hidden Valley, is its pristine waterfalls. Growing up as a kid watching adventure movies and tv shows I use to gaze in awe at some of these majestic jungle waterfalls. Working here has turned these visions into a reality.

I love to see the look on people’s faces when they witness our massive waterfalls, some going over 900 feet! Nothing beats the way people’s faces light up when they see our highlight, butterfly falls. This nearly 100-foot waterfall splashes down to a create a huge natural swimming hole, with blue water and lush forests, you will have people hitting up your phone asking you “where is this place?”

One of the best parts is there are no crowds. When you’re at Hidden Valley you don’t have to worry about waiting your turn for a picture or a swim, you can always have some of these pools to yourself.

While there is plenty more to do, these are just a few recommendations for your next trip to Belize.

Talk to you soon,
